At Isomata, a USC summer camp at Idyllwild, California, while daughter Laura was involved in activities, Evelyn learned how to make hand puppets from Harry Barnett, one of the premier puppeteers of the time. In 1964 Evelyn created 45 finger puppets, each of a different character. A number of them were then developed into a fund-raising project for Laura’s co-op nursery school.

Each do-it-yourself kit included all the materials needed to make the puppet, complete instructions, and a photograph of the finished piece. Eventually marketed through ERA, the puppets were selected for “California Design IX” and featured in House and Garden magazine.

Evelyn handcrafted other dolls and toys for her daughter. Many were embroidered or appliqued with fanciful designs.
